2016 Summer School at Rutgers!

Next year, the NE Union Women's Summer School will be hosted by the School of Management and Labor Relations, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. One of the great things about Rutgers is the auditorium in the Labor Education Center. It is hung all around with union banners, so a union girl always feels at home there. Here is a photo of a student from Maryland, Adia, asking questions during a general issues session in 2011.

The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap

The AAUP has put together a report that gives the facts about the differences in pay between women and men and how that difference changes depending on your race or nationality:

The pay gap is worse for women of color.

  • The gender pay gap affects all women, but for women of color the pay shortfall is worse. Hispanic women’s salaries show the largest gap, at 54 percent of white men’s earnings. Black women’s salaries stand at 64 percent of white men’s earnings. White men are used as a benchmark because they make up the largest demographic group in the labor force.

You can read a summary of the report and download it at this web page:

My First Summer School

My first Women's Summer School was in 1993. I was invited to co-teacher Computer Skills with Nancy deProsse, a union staff worker from Massachusetts who I had never met. I was very nervous because, even though I had helped people from Cornell, like Barbara Wertheimer, prepare for summer school, I didn't think I had enough experience to teach. Summer School was a Big Deal. It turned out that Nancy was a great teaching partner. We taught together for the next 8 years, and it was always so much fun.
